Once a year, Yokota Air Base opens its gates to the community during the Japanese-American Friendship Festival. The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force joined the USAF with static displays on the flight line and booths selling merchandise.
Japanese and American cuisine were both in high demand. As a volunteer for one of the food booths, I can honestly say that the lines did not stop until the food supply was depleted or the shop was closed for the night, whichever came first. Despite the heat, the humidity, and the complete lack of shade or seating, the turnout was impressive. Base public affairs announced that over 175,000 people attended the festival over the course of two days.
Hanabi. The best fireworks display I have ever seen, hands down. I was convinced I was watching the grand finale twice before it actually arrived.
